Basmati from Rhythm Collision Sound / The Yard 4ZZZ is once again coming back to BIG UP
SK Kawuma and the internationally aclaimed SK Simeon is coming back once again to BIG UP. We are proud to host this artist this is the artist who pioneered BIG UP few years back, never miss his enegetic perfomance
SK Simeon has been performing in Melbourne’s Reggae and Dancehall scenes since early 2011. SK Simeon takes on singjay style, which involves singing and toasting in Luganda and English, the former being his native language from hometown of Kampala, Uganda. With his singjay vocal delivery, and mixture of comedic tone with conscious lyrics, SK Simeon summons a wholesome and energetic atmosphere wherever he performs.
He’s played at numerous Reggae, Dancehall and Dub showcases including I love Dancehall, More Fire, and the Afrobeat edition of the Foreign Brother’s The Showcase just to name a few. SK Simeon has graced stages at Islands Vibes Festival in 2011 – the first ever African Festival held in Melbourne, Africultures Festival in Sydney in 2014, 2015, and 2016, the annual St Kilda Festival with duo SKAAKI and Yaw Faso, as well as the colossal White Night Melbourne festival 2016.
SK Simeon released his debut single ‘Melbourne Girls’ in early 2013, following on was his first local label-supported released the ‘Loving Machine EP’ with Scatter Music records, which was subsequently given the remix treatment by two of the most popular producers in Europe, Coco Taxi (SWE) and Hat + Hoodie (GER). That same year SK Simeon self-released his debut album ‘Digidance’. In its first week, Digidance received a lot of positive reviews both locally and internationally, establishing his place as a breakout artist in the reggae and Dancehall music community. 2015 saw SK Simeon experiment with collaboration by teaming up with fellow Melbourne musician and vocalist Akimera. As a duo they wrote, released and launched the self-titled album ‘SKAAKI’. In between all of this SK Simeon toured his live show through Europe twice (2014/15), also managing to spend time in the studio on music production with his Germany-based producer, King Toppa, whom he met via the online global music-sharing community Soundcloud.
SK Simeon has very successfully utilised online music-sharing platforms such as Soundcloud and Youtube to connect with many producers around the world. In doing so he’s been able to branch out and bring diverse musical styles together, despite not growing up around the everyday use of computers and information technology in general.
An example of this online interconnectivity is seen in SK Simeon’s very first single ‘Melbourne Girls’ being produced by Naram – a New Zealand-based producer whom he met through a friend, however the only way they connected was via email. Over time and by making connections like this SK Simeon has become somewhat of an expert at seeking-out producers to bring new and fresh flavours to his music, which makes his stand-out and expressive live show favourable for booking by promoters.
The uniqueness of his sound is vouched for by none-other than the UK’s Big Dada records, who in 2016 released a 12inch vinyl featuring all original vocals from SK Simeon and Yaw Faso in collaboration with eminent U.S producer MACHINEDRUM titled ‘MASKYA EP’. This recent collaboration adds to the already impressive list of SK Simeon collaborators including Tradesman (UK), Razah (GER) Jahlix (FR) Warrior Dread (JPN), Congo Tardis #1 (AUS), Producer Didi (UG), Harmon (AUS), Branko (PRT) and Astronomer (US).
